  • History of Hatherton

Hatherton is a settlement and Civil Parish located approximately 5 miles south-east of Penkridge, and on the western edge of modern-day Cannock.  It lies adjacent to and north of Watling Street which now, of course, is better known as the A5. The Civil Parish of Hatherton also includes the village of Calf Heath with its well known Hostelry, The Dog and Partridge.

The Parish of Hatherton was given to Wolverhampton Monastery by Lady Wulfruna in 994.  Its name, Hagerthorndun in the Domesday Book, means "the hill where Hawthorn's grow". It was once an exclave of Wolverhampton. Hatherton gave its name to the title of Baron Hatherton, and thus to the nearby, Hatherton Canal which is in the process of restoration by the Lichfield and Hatherton Canal Trust.

The Parish also boasts the beautiful Hatherton Hall which is a late Georgian House which replaced the former Norman Hall in 1817. The village church, St. Saviour's, followed on later in 1876. Hatherton which was bisected by the old Roman road known as Watling Street extends from Shoal Hill in the northeast to Four Ashes in the southwest.

The village of Hatherton itself lies on the southern slope of Shoal Hill, which has for many years been a popular resort for local people, and for tourists from Cannock and the Black Country. Situated directly on the A5 is the small village of Four Crosses, whose most prominent feature is its eponymous Inn, which has served the needs of travellers for over 350 years and features an inscription dated 1636 and regularly holds Ghost Evenings.
